To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet several requirements related to education, physical capability, and skill set. Here’s what you’ll need to apply:
Educational Qualifications
- Minimum of Grade 12 (Matric) or a qualification equivalent to NQF Level 3.
- Firefighting certifications: Firefighter 1 and 2, Hazmat Awareness, and Operations Certification.
- First Aid Certification Level 3 or Basic Ambulance Course.
Physical and Skill Requirements – Firefighter Internship
- Possession of a valid Code C driver’s license.
- Physically fit and medically cleared for operational firefighting tasks.
- Swimming ability is mandatory for rescue operations.
- No fear of heights (acrophobia) or enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).
- Fire and rescue experience is advantageous, though not mandatory.
- Preferably has at least three months of previous internship experience.
- Self-discipline and a diligent work ethic are key traits for success in this role.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Daily Station Responsibilities
- Adhere to Station Officer’s Instructions: Interns are expected to follow all directives and operational plans as set forth by the Station Officer.
- Attendance and Punctuality: Consistent attendance and readiness for duty are crucial.
- Vehicle and Equipment Inspection: Interns are required to perform daily checks and tests on firefighting vehicles and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: Routine cleaning of vehicles and equipment to uphold department standards.
- Report Issues: Promptly notify the on-duty officer of any malfunctions or concerns with equipment.
Operational and Emergency Response Tasks
- Incident Response: Assist senior firefighters in responding to incidents, including wildland, grass, and structural fires.
- Execution of Commands: Follow all instructions given on the scene to ensure efficient and safe operations.
- Protection of Property: Help in protecting firefighting equipment and property against fire damage.
- Rescue Operations: Participate in rescue operations, assisting with life–saving tasks as required.
Control Room and Additional Responsibilities
- Control Room Assistance: Perform administrative and communication duties within the control room as needed.
- Other Assigned Tasks: Take on additional responsibilities as directed by supervisors to support station operations.
