Job Overview – General Worker
The City of Tshwane is currently hiring for the position of General Worker (3 available roles) to support critical maintenance and operations within the water distribution network. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the reliability and functionality of water infrastructure, aligning with the organization’s commitment to community service and infrastructure enhancement.
Core Responsibilities
1. Maintenance and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean and safe workspace for all team members, ensuring an organized environment across all work areas, offices, vehicles, and facilities.
- Perform necessary housekeeping duties to support a healthy work setting and enable smooth operational workflows.
2. Water Pipeline Repair and Maintenance
- Assist with the repair of leaking water pipelines by engaging in excavation tasks, backfilling, and cleaning out debris such as soil, sand, and gravel from work trenches.
- Operate basic tools like shovels, pickaxes, rakes, and rammers to ensure efficient removal and replacement of excavation materials.
3. Logistics and Material Handling
- Execute tasks that involve sorting, loading, unloading, transporting, stacking, and storing a variety of items, including supplies, equipment, goods, and cargo.
- Facilitate the safe and organized storage and movement of materials, contributing to streamlined operations.
4. Equipment Operation and Site Clean-up
- Operate water pumps and maintain tools and equipment in optimal working condition.
- Ensure that tools and equipment are stored and handled properly, minimizing workplace hazards.
- Clean up job sites following the completion of procedures, leaving the area safe and organized.
Job Requirements – General Worker
Educational and Experience Qualifications
- Basic literacy skills are essential.
- Relevant experience in water distribution network maintenance is advantageous, but not mandatory.
Health and Physical Requirements
- Good health and physical fitness are required to handle the job’s physical demands.
- Applicants must have no existing back issues that could impact job performance.
Work Flexibility
- Candidates must be willing to work overtime, participate in standby shifts, and adjust to varied schedules as needed to meet operational demands.
