Key Responsibilities of a Security Officer
Security and Protection Services
- Conduct routine patrols to safeguard university property, students, staff, and visitors.
- Enforce access control policies to prevent unauthorized entry.
- Ensure all security infrastructure, such as gates and lighting, are in working condition.
- Identify, report, and respond promptly to security incidents.
- Secure crime scenes until supervisors arrive.
- Accurately document security incidents and complete required reports.
- Monitor and operate security systems effectively, including surveillance equipment.
- Assist in preliminary investigations when necessary.
- Provide escort services for staff during night shifts.
- Conduct searches of bags, vehicles, and premises when required.
- Enforce university safety regulations and policies.
Access Control Management
- Verify student, staff, and visitor access permits.
- Check vehicle permits, work orders, and asset control forms.
- Conduct security checks on materials being removed from campus.
- Lock and secure gates and doors after operational hours.
Customer Service and Incident Response
- Deliver exceptional security services with a professional demeanor.
- Assist with campus events, public gatherings, and emergencies as needed.
- Provide guidance to students, staff, and visitors on security protocols.
- Ensure compliance with university safety standards.
Health, Safety, and Emergency Response
- Act as a first responder in fire or medical emergencies.
- Operate and maintain security and protective equipment.
- Report faults in security systems and equipment.

Minimum Requirements for the Position
- Matric/Grade 12 (NQF4 equivalent qualification).
- Valid Grade C registration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).
- Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office proficiency).
- Police clearance certificate.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Minimum two years of security experience.
- Good physical, psychological, and medical fitness.
Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills
- NQF5 qualification or higher (advantageous).
- Experience with electronic access control and video surveillance systems.
- Previous work in educational or corporate security.
- Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP) preferred.
- Higher PSIRA grades (e.g., Grade A or B) or specialized security training.
- SAPS firearm competency certificate.
- Firefighting and first aid training.
Working Conditions & Job Requirements
- Shifts: Rotational shifts, including night and weekend duties (24/7/365 operations).
- Site Mobility: Required to work across multiple university campuses.
- Uniform: Must wear university–issued security uniform.
- Weather Conditions: Work in varying weather conditions.
- Firearm Handling: Subject to operational needs.
