Former President Jacob Zuma hosted a media briefing on December 16, 2023, introducing uMkhonto weSizwe as a new political party competing with South African political groups, including the ANC. uMkhonto weSizwe (Xhosa, Zulu, and Ndebele for “Spear of the Nation”; abbreviated MK) was the paramilitary wing of the African National Congress (ANC), founded by Nelson Mandela following the Sharpeville massacre, according to Wikipedia. Its mission was to combat apartheid in the country. President Jacob Zuma, an active member of uMkhonto weSizwe since 1962, now leads the newly established MK party.
